Implementing Cisco MPLS v2.3

This set of lab exercises (lab bundle) contains all the exercises associated with the Implementing Cisco MPLS (MPLS) 2.2 course. The lab exercises cover different aspects of MPLS configuration and monitoring, including Frame mode MPLS and several MPLS VPN scenarios.

Content

This set of lab exercises contains the following exercises:

Objectives

Upon finishing this set of exercises, you will be able to:
Verify the service provider IP addressing scheme, data-link connection identifier (DLCI) assignment, and interface status

  • Enable Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) and Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) to prepare backbone for MPLS
  • Enable Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) on Provider Edge (PE) and Provider (P) routers
  • Manipulate (enable/disable) Time-to-Live (TTL) propagation
  • Configure selective label distribution
  • Enable VPNv4 support over BGP sessions in a Service Provider backbone
  • Configure Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) instances needed for MPLS VPN
  • Configure static, Routing Information Protocol (RIP), EIGRP, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and BGP on Provider Edge - Customer Edge (PE-CE) VPN interfaces
  • Configure redistribution between PE-CE routing protocols (static, RIP, EIGRP, OSPF) running in VPN and per-VRF BGP
  • Configure RIP metric propagation across MPLS VPN backbone
  • Transport OSPF routes between customer sites
  • Monitor OSPF operation and OSPF topology database within a VPN
  • Monitor MPLS VPN operations
  • Connect a multi-homed customer site to the Service Provider network
  • Use local preference and Multi Exit Discriminator (MED) when running BGP inside a customer VPN to select the primary and backup links
  • Use AS-override feature to support overlapping AS numbers between customer sites
  • Verify the switchover from primary to backup link following the primary link failure and the reactivation of primary link after the physical connectivity is reestablished
  • Design and configure overlapping VPN networks
  • Remove customer sites from existing VRF instances
  • Configure VRFs with multiple route targets
  • Configure VRFs with different route distinguishers in the same VPN network
  • Monitor and troubleshoot overlapping virtual private networks
  • Design a Network Management VPN
  • Establish connectivity between management VRF and customer VRFs by configuring proper route targets
  • Configure a dedicated Internet subinterface between the PE-router and the CE-router
  • Establish routing between the customer and the Internet
  • Establish remote site routing between the customer and the Internet via customer's central site
  • Create and configure an Internet VPN
  • Isolate Internet routing from the MPLS VPN backbone
  • Establish central site PE-CE connectivity for Internet access
  • Establish remote site PE-CE connectivity for Internet access
  • Monitor Internet service in a separate VPN
  • Identify basic TE and MPLS TE concepts
  • Identify MPLS TE components
  • Create and configure MPLS TE
  • Monitor basic MPLS TE on Cisco IOS platforms

Importance

This lab bundle is mandatory for students attending the MPLS training, as it provides the means of getting the desired hands-on skills in MPLS VPN configuration and troubleshooting. It is also highly recommended to students who have attended the MPLS course in the past and would like to improve or refresh their configuration and troubleshooting skills.

Target Audience

This lab bundle is targeted at pre- and post-sales technical support engineers who have to design and implement MPLS VPN mechanisms in IP networks.

Prerequisite Knowledge

To successfully complete this set of exercises, you need in-depth knowledge about the following MPLS areas:

  • Frame mode MPLS (CEF, TDP/LDP, TTL propagation, selective label distribution, MPLS MTU issues)
  • MPLS VPN (VRF, route distinguisher, route target, VPNv4 BGP, address families) The required MPLS and MPLS VPN knowledge can be gained by attending the MPLS 2.2 course.
